Petroleum includes crude and process oils and petroleum products. Natural gas includes crude oil plus all condensates and petroleum gases extracted at gas separation plants and includes colliery methane. 'Renewables' includes hydropower, wind, solar, thermal (deep geothermal and heat pumps), gaseous renewable sources (landfill), solid renewable sources (wood, waste etc) and bioenergy.

This coincides with the advent of the development and expansion of modern renewable energy sources. Before the 1990s there were very limited consumption of modern renewable energy in the UK. For wind, wave, tidal and hydro, the figures represent the energy content of the electricity supplied, but for biofuels the figures represent the energy content of the fuel used. Large scale hydropower excludes pumped storage stations. Energy from waste combustion includes the biodegradable part only. Animal biomass includes electricity from poultry litter combustion, and meat & bone combustion. Plant biomass includes electricity from straw and energy crops. Anaerobic digestion includes electricity from farm waste digestion and other anaerobic digestion.

Plant biomass includes heat from straw, energy crops and paper & packaging. Anaerobic digestion includes heat from farm waste digestion and other non-farm anaerobic digestion.
