Energy & Net Zero

New renewable energy infrastructure is central to delivering a low cost, zero carbon future.

Summary

Infrastructure delivers power and heat to homes and businesses.

Our current energy system, which is still largely based on fossil fuels like natural gas, contributes to climate change. In 2021, around 30 per cent of UK greenhouse gas emissions come from generating electricity and heating buildings.
Switching to renewable electricity sources, upgrading electricity networks to support increased electrification, deploying charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, and changing the way we heat our homes are historic shifts. They present both challenges and opportunities for government and industry.
The Commission advises government on how to best support and regulate the energy sector to deliver the changes necessary for meeting the UK’s net zero goals.
The Commission has an objective to support the transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Reaching this target was one of the three strategic themes that shaped the Commission’s work in the Second National Infrastructure Assessment.
The second Assessment makes a series of recommendations in response to four key challenges in energy and reaching net zero:

  • the further decarbonisation of the electricity system
  • creating a viable path for heat decarbonisation
  • enabling the rapid rollout of electric vehicles
  • funding and delivering the new networks needed for hydrogen and carbon capture and storage.

New report underlines need to tackle carbon emissions from homes

A new report today warns that UK homes are “not fit for purpose” either against the threat of climate change or in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – and makes recommendations in line with those in the UK’s first-ever National Infrastructure Assessment. The study, from the Committee on Climate Change, recommends steps including using...

Going electric: rolling out an EV charging network

After 100 years of incremental change, in the coming decades we will witness a revolution on our roads. With more and more drivers going electric, the reign of the internal combustion engine will slowly but surely be committed to history. Once the preserve of only the most environmentally conscious, now EVs are going mainstream. While...

The Resources and Waste Strategy: Far enough? Fast enough?

The Government’s recent Resources and Waste Strategy is a welcome addition to the sector. It is comprehensive in its scope, covering everything from coffee cups to waste crime, and ambitious in both the range and detail of its proposals. We particularly welcome the strategy since it takes on board all of the recommendations on tackling waste...

Waste strategy welcome – with action needed now to match public ambition

The Government today published its new Resources and Waste Strategy to help ramp up recycling rates – and which includes measures in line with recommendations from the UK’s first-ever National Infrastructure Assessment. It follows research for the National Infrastructure Commission, which highlights the strong public support for the government to drive up recycling rates and...

Carbon capture and storage: the heat is on

We recently welcomed the Government’s new action plan on Carbon Capture and Storage, which could bring reductions in emissions from large industrial processes as part of wider efforts to tackle climate change.  Our National Infrastructure Assessment – the first of its kind for the UK – examined this emerging technology, and considered where it could...

Carbon capture plan welcome – and can be expanded to cut emissions from heat

The Government’s action plan on introducing carbon capture and storage to tackle emissions is welcome – and should be aligned with recommendations for a large-scale trial of hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas, the National Infrastructure Commission says today. With 32 per cent of the UK’s emissions coming from heat, tackling this must be...
